When you suffer from anxiety disorder, normal life seems impossible. Hypnosis for anxiety is designed to reduce anxiety and increase calmness. Instead of feeling stressed by social situations or new experiences, you feel relaxed and are able to enjoy yourself. Recently, scientific study and research have backed up the ability of hypnotherapy to reduce anxiety.
Hypnosis Helps Anxiety and Stress Disorders
Hypnosis for anxiety disorder has been found to reduce how often and intense anxiety is. Researchers used anxiety to help people relax before surgeries, tests, and medical procedures. It also helped for disorders like irritable bowel syndrome and headaches that worsen when anxiety occurs.
Researchers have found proof that hypnosis for anxiety works. In one study, 193 patients with anxiety disorder were given non-medical treatments. These patients were given treatments like hypnosis, phytotherapy, acupuncture and psychotherapy. In the scientific study, researchers found that the best results were from programs that focused on cognitive psychotherapy, autogenic training, behavioral psychotherapy and hypnosis for anxiety disorder. “Reference: Vopr Kurortol Fizioter Lech Fiz Kult. 2008 Nov-Dec;”
Acute Stress Disorder and Hypnosis
In another research study, scientists looked at how hypnosis for anxiety and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) could help acute stress disorder (ASD). Patients with ACD were given six sessions of CBT, CBT and hypnosis or supportive counseling. The groups with CBT or CBT and hypnosis had fewer incidents of post-traumatic stress disorder than the counseling group. The group that also had hypnosis had the greatest reduction in symptoms. “Journal of Consulting & Clinical Psychology. 2005”

Hypnosis Beats Biofeedback
Hypnotherapy for anxiety is actually better than just using biofeedback. In one study, researchers took 60 college students with anxiety disorder. Three groups were each given an hour of biofeedback, trophotropic treatment or hypnosis for anxiety. The study lasted for eight weeks. At the end, researchers had proof that hypnosis was the most effective way to lower anxiety out of the three options. “Journal of Consulting & Clinical Psychology. 1980”
Hypnosis Offers Long-Lasting Results
The effects of hypnosis may be quick, but they are also long-lasting. In another study, they brought in 23 patients with anxiety problems. For six weeks, they used audio tapes for self-hypnosis. At the end of the six weeks, the participants had lower blood pressure and reduced anxiety. Some patients were even able to reduce the anxiety medications that they took. Even after nine months passed by, the effects of the study were still felt by patients.
Treating Panic Attacks
One of the difficulties of having anxiety is panic attacks. A sudden trigger causes your throat to constrict and it becomes hard to breathe. Panic attacks may cause symptoms like a loss of appetite, dizziness, insomnia, an upset stomach, weight loss and acute fear. The patients may also fear going to work or visiting their doctor. When these individuals were treated with hypnosis, they had a better self image and a greater level of control. Many of the pathological symptoms disappeared and their panic attacks stopped.
Part of the reason hypnotherapy for anxiety is so successful is because of how it treats the fight or flight response. When you feel fear or are in danger, your body prepares to run away or fight the threat. In patients with anxiety, this reaction happens with things that are not actual threats. In one study, researchers found that hypnosis helped to decrease the fight or flight response. It helped lower the incidence of anxiety, stress and depression.
Treating PTSD, Trauma, Anxiety Through Hypnosis
There are more than 200 years of research that support hypnosis for treating PTSD. These techniques help patients who suffer from sleep problems, pain, anxiety and dissociation. Over time, hypnosis can help you work through a traumatic memory and cope. If you have been through a trauma recently, hypnosis can help you relax and control anxiety. It helps you anticipate the anxiety that comes from a trauma. You are able to visualize the traumatic event and effectively integrate it in your mind.
If you are like many people, you might feel stressed out before a medical operation or a test at school. Hypnosis can help reduce anxiety levels by 56 percent before an operation. This is higher than control groups and attention-control groups. For test takers, anxiety can help boost your performance by lowering your test anxiety. Because you feel less anxious, you are able to focus on your test and do your best. In one study, the people who received hypnosis scored much higher than the control group taking a reading test.
