Most of us have heard of phobias such as the fear of heights, the fear of water, or the fear of open spaces. But, have you heard of the fear of falling? This fear is more common than you may think. As with many phobias, it can be dehabilitating if it is allowed to take over. Fortunately, learning how to overcome a fear of falling down is easy when approached through hypnotherapy.
Those who have this phobia live with the fear that they are going to fall when they walk. As with other phobias, the fear of falling starts off with an anxious feeling. The more the individual pays attention to this fear, the stronger it becomes. Because of this, the individual is more likely to fall as they believe this fear into existence. If the person does fall, the experience reinforces their fear, and their fear gains greater potency. A vicious cycle is formed as the person’s confidence is gradually eroded away and replaced with a sense of fear. It is this fear, rather than the actual fall, that permeates the person’s life and prevents them from engaging in the everyday activities that they once enjoyed.
Overcome a fear of falling down
The key to dealing with the fear of falling is to gain confidence in one’s ability to walk. For most of us, we do not give a thought to walking; we just do it. Once a person develops a fear of walking, this activity is no longer delegated to the subconscious. Instead, it is given over to the mind. Think of something that you do well, something that you can do without giving any thought to it.
Perhaps you love to dance or playing sports. When you are engaged in such activities, you do not think through what your next move will be. Instead, you go on automatic pilot as you do not have to think about it. You just do it. Now what would happen if you, instead, thought about each dance step or athletic move that is required of you? Instead of moving in a fluid manner, your movements would be less smooth, and you would more likely make mistakes. Instead of trusting your body, you would be trapped in your head. People who are confident in their abilities are less likely to make mistakes than those who constantly think about it. In other words, the difference between the person who has the phobia and the one who is confident is what each person is focusing on.
The use of Hypnosis is one of the most effective ways to overcome a fear of falling down because it goes directly to your subconscious and creates messages that will support the individual’s confidence in their ability to walk safely. Because their confidence is boosted, they spend less time thinking of falling. They drastically reduces the chances of falling because they are no longer thinking about it.
